- Vitamins - A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism. A compound is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet. Thus, the term is conditional both on the circumstances and the particular organism. Vitamins are of two types: water soluble and fat soluble. It is an important nutrient and its deficiency can cause various diseases.
- Minerals - Dietary minerals are the chemical elements required by living organisms, other than the four elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen present in common organic molecules. The term "mineral" is archaic, since the intent of the definition is to describe ions, not chemical compounds or actual minerals. Dieticians may recommend that minerals are best supplied by ingesting specific foods rich with the element(s) of interest.
- Proteins - Proteins are large organic compounds made of amino acids arranged in a linear chain and joined together by peptide bonds between the carboxyl and amino groups of adjacent amino acid residues. The sequence of amino acids in a protein is defined by a gene and encoded in the genetic code. They are the building block of muscles and are thus necessary for the well-being of the body.
